Destination Spa Tips

Destination Spa Group provides tips for de-stressing this summer

Stress.org reports 62 percent of Americans have work-related neck pain, 44 percent have stressed-out eyes and 34 percent report trouble sleeping at the end of a work day. Want to take back your life this summer? Head to a Destination Spa.

With 24 locations from Phuket to Illinois from which to choose, all Destination Spa Group members offer a complementary balance of fitness, healthy cuisine, life-enhancing programs and relaxing spa services.

“Wellness is within reach for everyone this summer,” said DSG Executive Director Debra Koerner. “There are Destination Spas that cater to families, ones that welcome girlfriends, and spas that are perfect for solo stress relief. The lessons learned from just a few  days at a Destination Spa will transcend this summer and lead you on  the life-long path to less stress and more happiness.”  Natural health & wellness expert Koerner pulls from her vast  Destination Spa rolodex to highlight key opportunities for  de-stressing this summer:

1. Grab your girlfriends… earlier this year, Woman’s Day highlighted Destination Spas as a great resource for girlfriend getaways, to which Koerner replies, “Destination Spas are one of the few places where you can completely detach and de-stress. And, who doesn’t love a day filled with exercise, healthy food, spa treatments and your best friends?” Great examples of trips for girlfriends include Yoga Week at the Oaks at Ojai in August, Women’s Weeks at The Golden Door, and taking the girls to Thailand for experiences at Six Senses Sanctuary Phuket and Chiva-Som

2. Or, grab the kiddos… if it’s easier for you to relax with the kids around to share their love, there are theme weeks for families at some Destination Spas. For example, Canada’s Echo Valley Ranch invites families to saddle up. Kids and teens experience activities from catching trout to roasting s’mores around a fire, while parents have spa treatments and connect over a leisurely dinner

3. Better yet, try a solo wellness break. “Destination Spas allow you to be you. You can do as much or as little as you like. Choose from six classes a day or pool and hammock time. It’s up to you and what your body needs,” added Koerner. A great example of a meaningful solo trip is Green Mountain at Fox Run’s Young Women’s Program. Offered throughout the summer, this program is designed for women from 18 to 24 who find it difficult to maintain an ideal weight

4. Cook something up. From Canyon Ranch, Lenox; to Lake Austin Spa Resort; and Red Mountain, kitchens are sizzling this summer. Culinary classes and schools from renowned chefs help you master cooking skills for the whole family. From ways to connect with local growers, to making healthy food taste and look amazing, culinary journeys will engage spa-goers in creating a culinary party back at home.

5. Get your hike on. Dig out those dusty (or hardly used) hiking shoes from the back of the closet! From hikes in British Columbia with Mountain Trek to treks in Mexico with Rancho La Puerta and in Vermont through New Life Hiking Spa, summer is the time to explore Mother Nature’s bounty. Fun fact: When hiking a comfortable two miles per hour, a person weighing 150 pounds will burn 240 calories in one hour.  Even more calories can be burned by increasing speed. (Source:

Aromatherapy Associates

We asked Aromatherapy Associates what products to use to treat skin conditions as well as for gifts:

Photos

Question 1: What aromatherapy products can I use to treat my acne? - Jen, New York, NY

For skin that is acne prone, we recommend using the Deep Cleanse Face Wash or the Rose Exfoliating Cleanser—both contain lavender and tea tree oil; both are anti-septic and anti-bacterial, without being harsh.  For regular maintenance, use the Purifying Facial Scrub 2-3x per week.  This refreshing scrub unblocks pores with natural exfoliators (corn cob granules and jojoba beads), along with soothing & calming orange flower water and petit grain.  As a final part of an anti-acne skin care ritual, we recommend the deep cleanse face mask 2x per week. Ylang-Ylang regulates oiliness, and contains tea tree and lavender, as well as ginger to boost skin circulation.  Sweep off excess product with the Refining face tonic and follow with refining face oil.

Question 2: Are there any products that can clear up my rosacea without a prescription? - Ariel, Los Angeles, CA

We recommend using the most gentle cleanser—Renewing Rose Cleanser.

We also suggest using the Nourishing Face Oil, which contains rose, sandalwood, evening primrose, and jojoba oils to sooth and protect skin, to be followed by the Triple Rose Renewing Moisturizer—which contains anti-inflammatory red algae and healing rose and sandalwood essential oils.  For medical skin care concerns, always consult a dermatologist before trying a new product or skin care regime

Question 3: Are there any Father’s Day products that I can get my father? - Samantha, Portland, OR

Father’s day is a great way to introduce products to your dad.  We recommend the Deep Cleanse Face Wash & Refining Face Tonic as a thoughtful gift set.  Both products are perfect for men who shave regularly, and contain tea tree, marine extracts and soothing Aloe Vera.

For a relaxing gift:  Our De stress line includes a De-Stress body wash for use in the shower.  For sore muscles or tension headaches, this gel instantly cools and eases aches & pains and contains lavender, a known anti-inflammatory.

Question 4: Do you have any recommendations for bath products to help me relax? - Jodi, Miami, FL

Relaxing bath oils are one of the most well-known parts of the Aromatherapy Associates line. Using true aromatherapy oils truly relax the mind as well as the body and we offer a full selection of bath/shower oils and companion body moisturizers for every need—whether it is for relaxation, to re-energize, or de stress, we recommend you try the Essentials Collection, which contains Deep Relax, De Stress and Revive bath & oils.www.aromatherapyassociates.com

The Golden Door Spa at The Boulders

Opened in October 2001, the Golden Door Spa at The Boulders brings the distinct philosophy of the original Golden Door in Escondido, California – the oldest, continually operating destination spa in America – to the serene, inspirational Sonoran Desert of Carefree, Ariz.  The 33,000-square-foot spa wraps around the north side of the base of the resort’s signature boulder monument.  It offers a warm Southwestern feel and complements the existing signature architecture of The Boulders.

When Deborah Szekely created the original Golden Door in 1958, she drew inspiration from the ancient Honjin inns of Japan, where weary travelers sought sanctuary.  Great attention was paid to personal service and therapeutic treatments such as massage and soothing baths.  That concept is continued at The Golden Door Spa at The Boulders, where guests find restoration, pampering and renewed energy.  The facility incorporates the elements of feng shui and the Zen-like ambiance of the original Golden Door while staying true to the natural environs and Native American influences of The Boulders.

The Golden Door Spa at The Boulders is designed with an active (West) wing and a more tranquil (East) wing. Its 24 treatment spaces are complemented by such signature elements as a labyrinth (path to tranquility), and an authentic Tipi for guided meditation. The West Wing houses the check-in area, fitness center, and mind/body and movement studios, as well as the Spa Café.  The facilities in the West Wing all feature sweeping views of either the awe-inspiring 12-million-year-old boulder pile or Black Mountain in the distance. The East Wing has a more contemplative setting with meditation areas, treatment spaces, hydrotherapy, a full-service salon, elaborate locker rooms, and a circular tea room.

The facility boasts a pool specially dedicated to Watsu (underwater treatment designed to bring partakers “back to the womb”); three Vichy treatment rooms; one couples suite (with private whirlpool, terrace and outdoor fireplace); and one “Ultimate Spa Suite” (700 square-feet with private access, steam showers, private patio, outdoor shower, private Jacuzzi, indoor and outdoor massage tables, and television).

The state-of-the-art 2,000-square-foot Fitness Center features LifeFitness strength-training equipment, treadmills, Tectix bicycles and steppers, EFX elyptical cross-trainers, and free weights.  A Movement Studio provides the optimal environment for Pilates, Spinning, Step Aerobics and more.  And the Yoga Studio is perfect for Hatha Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, stretching and meditation.

Health and fitness services include fitness assessment, one-on-one workouts and personal training, body composition, cardio coaching and nutritional analysis.

Rock-climbing is available for adventurous souls who love a thrill and a challenge. Taught by The Boulders’ professional guides, the clinic is geared for beginners and utilizes crystalline granite and metamorphic rock, estimated to be about two billion years old, which defines the spectacular desert landscape surrounding The Boulders.

Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Fitness Team

We asked The Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain’s Fitness Team for advice on Triathlon Training

Athletic prowess comes naturally to the fitness team at Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale, Ariz.  From gold medal Olympic swimmer Misty Hyman to world-class runner and Olympian Mike Schneider, the country’s leading boutique resort and spa is ripe with talent.  Demonstrating the perfect mix of brain and brawn, Sanctuary’s experts share their best practices for meeting the demands of the classic swim – bike – run challenge:

Swimming Tips From Gold Medal Olympic Swimmer and Sanctuary Swim Coach, Misty Hyman
“Speed is key, but learning how to ‘sight’ in open water is even more important, especially when dealing with the mayhem of hundreds of swimmers launching at once.  Work on sighting after your breath and focus on stationary objects in the water, like buoys. This will keep you swimming straight, which will skim time off the clock and reserve much-needed energy that can push you to the finish line.”

Cycling Training Tips From Sanctuary’s Fitness Director Kara Thomas
“Strengthening the core is imperative – the abdominals and lower back allow proper execution of the limbs.  Pilates Reformer training will keep the lumbar spine strong, and the peripheral work with resistance straps lengthens and strengthens muscles and increases flexibility for cycling.  Bikers should also consider Mat Pilates to work on stretches such as swan, side pull over and leg circles.  These put you in an extension position to balance the body from the constant state of forward flexion that you are in when biking.”

Running Tips From Sanctuary Trainer Mike Schneider, Olympian at the 1996 Atlanta Games
“Divide your workouts – 40 minutes in the morning and 40 minutes in the afternoon – to allow for recovery time.  Focus on long-distances for your first four months of training to improve your endurance.  Within three months of the triathlon, do track mile repeats and more sport-specific training to increase speed.”
